Betty Bridal Atelier is a fashion forward and high style wedding dress salon that offers top bridal designer dresses from around the world. This chic bridal salon is located on 463 King Street Unit C downtown Charleston SC. I had so much fun interviewing Rachel, owner of Betty Bridal Atelier; she is absolutely fabulous! Make sure to stop by their trunk show starting this Thursday, July 21. This exclusive event is something you're not going to want to miss! See you there!
Tell us about your upcoming event this weekend? (Date, time, etc.)
We are having three trunk shows over the next three weekends. They will all be showcasing the Spring 2017 bridal collections, which are not yet in stores. The first show is Carolina Herrera (Thursday, July 21-Saturday, July 23), the second is Ines de Santo (Thursday, July 28-Saturday July 30) and finally Oscar de la Renta (Thursday August 4 - Saturday August 6). 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.
How did you get started, how long have you been around?
The Atelier recently opened - Mid May to be specific. I have been in bridal for over 10 years and I was a consultant and buyer with the oldest store in Chicago before moving to Charleston to open Betty Bridal. The designers I worked with in Chicago wanted to open in the Charleston area but they hadn't found the right store, so I was very happy that they wanted me to carry their collections when they found out that I was opening a store on my own in Charleston.
What types of gowns do you offer?
We currently are only offering bridal gowns. All the collections are hand made, couture pieces that are special ordered for each client. They will come to the store to try on the sample and then we would order them a new gown especially for them.
Name a few of your favorite designers?
That is like asking to pick a favorite child! I love each and every designer I carry for different reasons - I am thrilled to have all of them. The quality and design of the gowns we carry are truly stunning.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I've always loved bridal in general - it is such an important dress in a woman's life. But I love seeing trends evolve and also love to try and carry gowns that I think will do well in the Charleston area. Every city has it's own flavor, which makes buying gowns a challenge. I have to read the market correctly. But it is so fun to hear what all different brides are doing differently.
Are walk ins welcome or do you prefer to book appointments in advance?
I want to accommodate every client that I can so I am happy to take a walk in if there is availability. But since we are a small store with limited staff we do prefer appointments so that I can set aside the proper amount of time for each bride. I don't like rushing a client through an appointment. We also want to make sure we have the proper space available so that her party is comfortably seated so they can enjoy themselves as well!
When is the best time to begin gown shopping?
10-12 months before the wedding is the ideal time. It can take 6 months to order a dress and you need 2-3 months for fittings. However if the bride doesn't have that amount of time we can work with her schedule. Designers can get us the dresses more quickly if we need them to.
When is the best time to schedule a fitting?
At Betty, I would just say calling and making an appointment is the most important thing. I never overbook clients whether a weekday or a weekend. I just want to make sure I have properly prepared. We are open Tuesday - Saturday between 10 AM and 6 PM. However I can always make exceptions in a bride needed to come in after store hours. We want to accommodate everyone!
Who should a bride bring with her while gown shopping?
Keep it small. Everyone has different opinions and the most important one is the bride herself. I'd say one to two people, 3 tops. Beyond that can get very confusing.
What is one trend you could live without?
Overly sexy gowns. I think it looks more sophisticated to not reveal too much skin.
Do you prefer veil or no veil?
Depends on the dress and the client! I personally love veils though.
Any other advice a bride should know before starting her gown shopping?
Enjoy it, have fun and don't stress. Keep an open mind and just pick what you feel most beautiful in, whether it was something you have envisioned for years or something that totally surprises you.
